Cathey Miller : June 10 - July 8
Dallas artist Cathey Miller will be showing new work entitled “Just Visiting” at IR Gallery, located at 830 Exposition Avenue, suite 103. The show runs from June 10 through July 8 with a reception on Saturday, June 18 from 7:00-9:00 PM. Admission is free to the reception and art is available for viewing during regular gallery hours, which are Saturdays from 1-5 PM or by appointment.
Miller’s paintings since 2003 have explored a place called ‘Cathedonia,’ an alternative universe that she believes exists. Using acrylic paint, and attaching prodigious amounts of fake jewels, plastic eyeballs and sparkly things attached to the canvases, Miller portrays the Planet of Cathedonia, in its metallic, pearlescent, and fluorescent glory. Bright colors, figurative painting, and dynamic action revealed a world where all women are lesbians, there are flying bird headed lobsters, and Cathey herself is the Queen. It is a time of battles, heroism, and celebratory large beverages.
In the Cathedonian Paintings of 2003, the subject matter, style, and compositions were all turned inwards. These paintings, which were shown at the MAC last summer were large, and complicated and filled with hidden messages and double meanings.
In searching for ways to simplify her Cathedonian promotional materials, the style and freshness of the classic sideshow banner was a good fit.
Miller has always imagined Cathedonians who crash land on earth being shown in this way and her current show Just Visiting explores this notion further. Also included in the exhibit will be several new smaller paintings from the red-haired lady project which depict mothers, twins, and other happy lobster people. Miller claims these images communicate Cathedonian ideals of truth, beauty ,desire, and romantic heroism.
Miller is a 1985 graduate of Art Center College of Design in Pasadena CA. Upon graduation, she moved to New York City where she had work published as an illustrator in numerous publications. In 1988, she moved to Dallas and established her own studio which catered to the design industry, branching out later into theatrical backdrops, and painting for film and television. Miller has been showing her personal work in galleries since 1990. She currently lives and works in Deep Ellum.
