Dallas photographer Hal Samples is showing new work that is part of the Hero to Zero Project at IR Gallery, located at 830 Exposition Avenue, suite 103. The opening reception is Saturday, February 5 from 7:00-9:00 PM and the show will hang through February 16, 2005. Admission is free to the reception and art is available for viewing during regular gallery hours, which are Saturdays from 1-5 PM or by appointment. Profits from the show benefit the homeless through Central Dallas Ministries.

Hal Samples began the art-based Hero to Zero project more than 15 months ago. He has successfully raised over $30,000 in monies directly benefiting the homeless of Dallas using the vehicle of an art gallery to focus attention on this segment of our population. He has shown is such prestigious venues as the Latino Cultural Center, Angstrom Gallery, and the Janette Kennedy Gallery to promote the project. His work gives humanity and dignity to the face of homelessness, with each person he photographs featured prominently and with their first name.

Hal’s colorful past gives him the ability to make connections with both sides of the street. Hal’s story is one of a “wash boy” to “top boy” who then later, went from “hero to zero” in 2000. Hal is currently using his talents in photography to encourage others to take a closer look at themselves and the face of homelessness in Dallas. Based on experiences and the path his life has taken he believes that others, when given the opportunity, can be inspired to make life changes. Through this project he is confident a momentum will be developed to fuel inner city movements to help cure and re-educate the homeless, and inspire others who have the potential to make a difference to take action.
